World War One (WWI), or the Great War, was a global war which pitted the Central powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire against the allied forces of Britain, France and Russia, lasting from August 1914 to 1919.
The war resulted in a large amount of slaughter, carnage and destruction. With millions of soldiers, and many civilians killed, the Great War paved the way for major political reforms, instability in Europe and laid the groundwork for World War II.
